Standings Comparison The Take Two giants of European basketball take center stage when Olympiacos hosts Fenerbahce in a rematch of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Championship Game from just two seasons ago. The Reds are still coming together under new coach David Blatt and have lost three of their last four games, though they have played two-thirds of their games on the road so far. Fenerbahce has lost just once all season. Marquee Matchup Though there are many stars on both teams, two of the biggest names in the contest are the head coaches. Blatt and Zeljko Obradovic know each other well both from their many years battling for EuroLeague glory and, more-recently, clashing in the Turkish League when Blatt was at the helm of Darussafaka Istanbul. With so much talent on the rosters, both Blatt and Obradovic have plenty of players with whom to turn this game into a tactical thriller Fenerbahce men at home in Athens Three members of the Fenerbahce delegation should feel right at home this week in Athens. Kostas Sloukas joined Olympiacos as a teenager and spent five seasons with the club. Coach Obradovic guided Olympiacos's archrival Panathinaikos for 13 seasons from 1999 through 2012 and guard Erick Green played for the Reds in 2016-17 when they lost the championship game to Fenerbahce. Keys to victory: Olympiacos Olympiacos has two main playmakers in Vassilis Spanoulis (5.8 apg.) and Nigel Williams-Goss (4.2 apg.) and opposing defenses have a tough time shutting them both down, but together they need to threaten the baskets, too. In the three games they have both scored in double figures, Olympiacos defeated KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz and Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv and lost narrowly to CSKA Moscow on the road. If the two can combine for 25 points and 10 assists, Olympiacos will be in a good spot Keys to Victory: Fenerbahce Although Fenerbahce has played exceptional basketball in the paint led by Jan Vesely, the team has been regularly outrebounded and its 13.3 offensive rebounds allowed per game are the second-most in the league. Between Nikola Milutinov and Zach LeDay, the visitors have some excellent offensive rebounders and Fenerbahce must do its job on the glass to improve its chances of snagging an important road win. *Information taken from euroleague.net
In this preview series, I'll try to do team previews of all 16 EuroLeague teams before the season. I will do a team preview each day for 16 straight days in alphabetical order from logos on Euroleague official website. Not too much detail, but hopefully will help with spreading information about 2018-19 EuroLeague clubs' history and present. Any comment related to the club or this post itself is welcome in the comments section. But it wasn't until 1990s that the club became a prominent one in Spain & Europe. They won Copa del Rey in 1995 which was their first major trophy. Reached Saporta Cup in 1994 and 1995 both, achieving Europe-wide success. In 2001, they played in the first and only EuroLeague finals series against Bologna, with a stacked team against another. The series were a best-of-5 and Bologna became champions on the 5th game. But 2000s were their best decade. Won 2 of their 3 Spanish League titles in 2000s, won 4 of their 6 Copa del Rey titles in the same decade, won all 4 of their SuperCup titles as well in 2000s. They made 5 EuroLeague Final Fours, 4 of which came in 2000s. They finished as the finalists twice, never coming up with the championships. Their most recent Final Four trip came in 2015-16 when they finished 4th. Shavon Shields: Had an awesome season with Trento and a phenomenal Italian League finals. Average outside shooter but can score in transition, off movement and cuts and from post-up plays. Two-way player. Tornike Shengelia: One of the best players in EuroLeague. Very good shooter inside the 3pt arc, faces up well, can accelerate in halfcourt, can run in transition, his mid-post game is deadly and his mid-range is a threat. Became a two-way player, rebounds extremely well at his position and improved as a passer quite some last year. Johannes Voigtmann: Great touch around the basket, is a great statitionary 3 point shooter, can rebound well and pass really well for a center. Not as good on defense as his fellow center Poirier, but is active and makes the rotations still even with a worse physical profile for that end compared to Poirier. Vincent Poirier: Last season he was a EuroLeague rookie and somewhat improved as the season progressed. Great defender but not as good as on offense as Voigtmann. Still could be the best center of a lot of EuroLeague teams. Could be that for Baskonia in 2018-19 as well. Has more athletic finishes than Voigtmann but comfortably the worse touch without a shooting threat as well. Rebounds super well. Head Coach Profile Pedro Martinez (57 years old) started to get international acclaim pretty recently despite being a head coach for 28 years. His work with Valencia that earned the club an ACB title earned him the Baskonia job and he did great last season. He has a lot of interesting and effective plays with different offensive principles, sending players from all positions to different parts of the floor with different tasks throughout a game by going into different actions in his playbook. Interestingly, he coached Baskonia for a brief period in 2005 but was fired pretty soon despite having some success. He's worked solely with Spanish clubs throughout his coaching career. Supporters Despite having ties to football club Alaves, Baskonia is a basketball club only and is one of the teams that receive great and active support and have a big fanbase despite being a one-sport basketball club. They were 4th in EuroLeague attendance last season with a 11.351 average attendance number. 14.923 was the highest, 9196 was the lowest attendance number they had in 2017-18 EuroLeague season. In 2016-17, they were first in attendance with a 11.633 as the average and 14.875 as the highest & 9437 as the lowest attendance number. Baskonia fans can get loud, even if they don't create the loudest atmosphere in Europe. But you'll hear chants and noise very clearly throughout a Baskonia game. photo1, Final Four in Berlin in 2016 after losing, photo3, photo4, photo5, photo6, photo7. youtube1, youtube2, youtube3, youtube4, youtube5. POINTS OF DISCUSSION *Can Luca Vildoza take a step and have a break-out year after all the flashes he showcased last season? *Can Tornike Shengelia be the best player in the league, if not a top 3 player or MVP of the season? *Is Pedro Martinez a top EuroLeague level coach? *Any chance they miss the playoffs? *Did they have a good offseason with the right moves?
Game Day - Fenerbahçe Doğuş - Zalgiris Kaunas - Final Four - Semi Final
Fenerbahçe - Zalgiris Kaunas Final Four - Semi Final Final Score: 76-67 Graphic Stats Video Highlights Information Friday, May 18th, 2018 Match Time: 19:00 Turkish Time, 16:00 GMT, 12:00 US Eastern Venue: STARK ARENA (Belgrade) Referees: HIERREZUELO, DANIEL, Spain - RADOVIC, SRETEN, Croatia - LATISEVS, OLEGS, Latvia TV: BeIn Sports 3 - euroleague.tv Rosters Comparison The Take The defending champs will be facing the hungry newcomers on Friday, May 18 when Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul (21-9) faces Zalgiris Kaunas (18-12) in the first semifinal at Stark Arena in Belgrade with a spot in the EuroLeague Championship Game at stake. Fenerbahce finished second in the regular season and knocked off KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz in the playoffs (3-1), while Zalgiris finished sixth and in its series shocked Olympiacos Piraeus (1-3) to get to the club's first Final Four since 1999. Fenerbahce has been led all season by high-flying big man Jan Vesely (12.9 ppg., 5.2 rpg.) plus guards Brad Wanamaker (11.3 ppg.) and Kostas Sloukas (10.0 ppg., 5.5 apg.). Sharpshooters James Nunnally (10.0 ppg.) and Luigi Datome (9.5 ppg.) and power forward Nicolo Melli (8.5 ppg., 5.0 rpg.) were also major contributors all season. For Zalgiris, which will have all its players participating in their first Final Four, playmaker Kevin Pangos (12.7 ppg., 6.0 apg.) has had a breakout season alongside captain Paulius Jankunas (11.4 ppg., 4.9 rpg.), center Brandon Davies (9.4 ppg.) and power forward Aaron White (9.1 ppg.). Zalgiris has slightly stronger offensive numbers than Fenerbahce, but the champs had the best defense all season (76.1 ppg. allowed against Zalgiris's 80.1 ppg.) and if they manage to capitalize on that, it will be a hard time for the warriors from Kaunas. The matchups between Vesely and Davies in the paint and Sloukas and Pangos in the backcourt will probably be the starting points on which the game's foundation rests. Coach Zeljko Obradovic knows better than anyone what it takes to win games in the Final Four (he has lifted the trophy nine times), but his former player, Coach Sarunas Jasikevicius, who's in just his second full season as a coach, won four times as a player and also knows a thing or two about the most-exciting weekend in European basketball. Expect a marquee duel between a champ that wants to extend its reign and an underdog whose heart makes anything possible. Get ready for the Final Four.
I really enjoyed the fact that CLE & BOS would be facing each other in Eastern Conference Finals for two straight years, regardless of the overhaul of changes that these teams have gone through. I decided to to a Roster COMPARISON from the 2016-2017 Playoffs to the 2017-2018 Playoffs and note which players from last year's series are no longer playing for that team.
